The 2018 Rohatyn Center Annual International and Interdisciplinary Conference showcased lectures that represent the newest and most interesting perspectives from across multiple disciplines.  The 2018 Conference, 50 Years of Struggle sought to provide those same new perspectives on a single year: 1968.  The lectures on this website reflect this goal, each posing unique and original questions, from examining intersectionality in the Caribbean or a genealogical study of the spread of Maoism.  The conference, and by extension, this website, hopes to provide a kaleidoscopic lens through which to view this momentous year.  Please browse the tabs below to view the sections of the website.

Keynote: The Ambiguous Consequences of Failed Revolutions”

The multiple uprisings of 1968 challenged authorities, heralding new freedoms, equalities, and solidarities, even a reconciliation between human beings and nature. As a result, many institutions were reformed, many liberations celebrated, many lives saved and changed. A new order was powerless to be born. We live with the residues and unintended consequences—the unnerving coexistence of freer lives and nativist backlash.
